Muslims have been using complex geometry to create beautiful and intricate Islamic art for thousands of years. Some of this art is on the walls of buildings, schools, mosques, and even homes. It comes in all shapes, sizes, and colours.

Your task is to look at some examples and imagine how Islamic vector art could evolve in the future. What will it look like, and how might modern mathematics and technology create a new form of Islamic art?

Ages: 7+

Group size: Individually.

Learning aims:  familiarity with Islamic design, introduction to math-based art, creative thinking, design skills.

You'll Need: Youtube, pencil, paper, triangle ruler, coloured pencils or markers, black pen for lining.

Let's Get Started!

1. Watch these exciting videos to get an introduction to classical Islamic art!

2. Imagine what the Islamic geometry art of the future could look like. Using what you know of science or math, come up with futuristic Islamic art designs of your own.

3. Draw an Islamic school, and incorporate your futuristic designs on its ceilings and walls! Imagine how new technology might bring this vector art to life in an interactive way!
